What Is BOTOX® Cosmetic?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a prescription medicine that is injected into muscles and used to improve the look of moderate-to-severe frown lines between the brows in people 18 to 65 years of age for a short period of time (temporary).

BOTOX® Cosmetic is administered by a healthcare professional as a simple, nonsurgical treatment that is injected directly into the muscles between the brows. It works by blocking nerve impulses to the injected muscles. This reduces muscle activity that causes moderate to severe lines to form between the brows.

To maintain good oral hygiene, the American Dental Association recommends brushing your teeth twice daily and flossing at least once per day. At Dentistry of South Florida we suggest using an ADA approved fluoride toothpaste with a soft-bristle brush that fits your mouth comfortably, allowing you to reach all areas easily. It is also important to clean between the teeth once a day with dental floss or inter-dental cleaners.

This will remove plaque and food particles from between the teeth, areas where your toothbrush just can’t reach. Just remember, you only have to floss the teeth you want to keep!

It is important that you talk to your dentist or dental hygienist about what oral care products will be effective for you, as needs vary amongst everyone. You should replace your toothbrush every three to four months or sooner if the bristles become warn and frayed. A worn toothbrush will not do a good job of cleaning your teeth.

Homecare recommendations may include: prescription fluoride toothpaste or rinse, medicated mouth rinse to control bacteria, as well as advanced electric tooth brushes such as the RotoDent. All of the products mentioned are available at our office.

Bruxism, or grinding of the teeth, can also worsen the effects of periodontal disease, cause bite problems and pain or misalignment of the jaw joint (TMJ). Bruxism can also cause esthetic concerns by wearing down the teeth and changing your smile. Staining can also occur in the worn areas, which gives the smile a dull and aged appearance.

The occlusal guard will interrupt the grinding process. The appliance may not completely break the habit, but it will stop further damage to the teeth, alleviate pain and allow for a more restful sleep.

An occlusal guard (sometimes called a night guard) is made of plastic and most often fits over the upper teeth. Many people wear the appliance at night when they are most likely to clench or grind their teeth. Two appointments are needed to make an occlusal guard.

The first appointment, our doctors will take impressions of your teeth, then send the impressions to a lab, where the occlusal guard is fabricated. During the second appointment, she will adjust the occlusal guard, making sure that the appliance fits correctly and is comfortable to wear. There are several kinds of mouth guards. While boil-&-bite types do not require a dental fitting, the most effective and more comfortable mouth guards are custom made.

Tooth decay is an infectious and transmissible bacterial disease. When a person eats sugar, or other refined carbohydrates, some oral bacteria produce acid that removes minerals from the surface of the tooth, a process that is known as demineralization. If the demineralization process continues for a period of time, a cavity is formed. Iffluoride is available, the demineralization process can be reversed, thereby preventing the cavity. In addition,fluoride reduces the ability of the oral bacteria to produce acid.

It has been demonstrated that fluoride’s action in preventing tooth decay provides a benefit to both children and adults throughout their lives. The health benefits of fluoride include a reduction in the frequency and severity of tooth decay, a decrease in the need for fillings and tooth extractions, a reduction in pain and suffering associated with tooth decay, and the obvious elevation of self-esteem that goes with improved oral functioning and appearance.

Your teeth are covered with a sticky film of bacteria, called plaque. When you don’t clean your teeth after eating, plaque bacteria use sugar and starch in food as a source of energy. The bacteria convert the sugar or starch into harmful acids that attack tooth enamel for as long as twenty minutes or more. Repeated attacks may cause the enamel to break down, resulting in cavities.

A dental sealant is an acrylic-like material that helps shield out decay-causing bacteria from the chewing surfaces of back teeth. Dr. Berkovich will base her diagnosis and recommendation for dental sealants on the patient’s susceptibility to tooth decay and how the teeth were shaped when they originally formed below the gum. Though there is no specific age at which sealants are indicated, often Dr. Berkovich we will recommend that the best time to apply them is when the six-year molars (the first permanent back teeth) appear.
